NOTES: This system has been built from the ground up, and NO DSN patches are to be installed. All patches have been installed at source code level. All the files on this disk have been modified, and are no longer compatable with other versions of OS78. Mixing OS278 files with OS78 files can affect the operation of the system; destroy the system disk; and or the data disk. Use HELP to aid in the use of the OS278 system. Documentation is never perfect or complete. Trying to document a system without writing a manual isn't easy. However the documentation supplied should help in using most of the enhancements. If you do need a manual refer to OS/78 User's Manual (order # AA-5748C-TA). Remember that any documentation on this disk supersedes the OS/78 manual. Enjoy Some notes on OS278 DISK 1 of 3 contains all system files, and development tools DISK 2 of 3 contains Basic, and Fortran 4 DISK 3 of 3 is the OS278 winchester install disk. HARD DISK INSTALL installs OS278 on your hard disk by allocating a volume called OS278. This supports the devices RX50:, RX51:, RD50;, RD51:, RD52:, RD53: To install OS278 on the winchester simply boot the floppy (disk 3 of 3) and follow the directions. MONITOR - o Can accept lower case input DUPLICATE - o Not compatible with OS278. (File RXCOPY.SV has been removed) o All formatting is now done by FORMAT.SV. RX01/02 - o Device names have changed from RXA0-3 to RX20-3. o The new RX handlers not compatable with original RX handlers. CCL.SV, SET.SV, MONITOR - o not compatable with previous versions of OS78/OS278. o Any attempt to mix OS278 utilities with OS78 utilities will corrupt your disk. SETUP.SV - o For DECmate II only. This invokes the user selection menu. WPFLOP.SV - o Has many fixes over version 3.0. o When editing a file in WPS that has just been transfered from OS278 press GOLD ADVANCE. This will align the text to the current ruler setting. This only needs to be done once. LPTS.HN - o This handler now accepts SET LPT WIDTH command. o Modifications have been made to pass 7 bit characters, and all control codes. FUTIL.SV, BATCH.SV - o Has been modified to allow patching under BATCH control. o Batch, system commands must be in upper case. CREF.SV - o The CREF literal table has been fixed. HELP.SV, HELP.HL - o The help file reflects the changes made to this system. BASIC system - o Refer to the BASIC.TX file for the enhancements. o Note: The AND, OR instructions have been removed. RENUM.BA - o Replaces RESEQ.BA, requires this system for operation. List the program for operation procedures. EDIT.SV - o Virtual text editor. Refer to EDTHLP.TX file. o Note: On occasion when editing near the end of the file the editor will display one line twice. This will occur at the bottom of the screen. If this happens press GOLD R to refresh the screen. This is a bug. However we feel that the advantages of the editor outweigh this one problem, so we decided to leave it on the system. For those of you who prefer to use the old OS78 EDIT or TECO with VTEDIT for the VT100 this system will not restrict the operation. MOUNT.SV - o Mounts a hard disk volume on designated RD50:, RD51:, RD52:, or RD53:. Syntax: Modates volumes of any 8kbyte multiple size up to the capacity of the disk. Traditionally, OS278 has regarded the hard disk to be of fixed 4096 block size. When the Hard Disk Utility under Master Menu allocates an OS278 volume, it creates a directory that has the proper empty space entry for the size of the volume - whatever the size may be. When the OS278 SQUISH or ZERO commands are invoked, however, the last directory empty entry is set so that the total number of blocks on the disk is 4096. FIXDIR sizes the disk by reading its hard disk volume directory entry and then adjusts the OS278 directory so that things add up. FIXDIR vname or R FIXDIR vname MENU.SV - This command will boot the master menu volume. Disk 3 of 3 OS278 winchester install disk - After OS278 has been installed on the winchester the startup volume is set to the OS278 system. If you wish to reset the startup volume to Master Menu follow the below instructions. Boot the winchester. At the OS278 system prompt enter the CCL command MENU. Master Menu is now active. Enter date. Select the HD (Hard Disk) services menu. Press NEXT SCREEN. Select the S option (Select startup volume). Enter the volume name MENU as the startup volume. Master Menu is now marked at the startup volume.
